Kirana’s story

Art is therapy

I have always yearned for a deep connection with others, one that goes far beyond words. As a child growing up in Germany, I often struggled to articulate my thoughts, leaving me feeling speechless and unheard.

Colours and images seemed to come to me foremost and early on in my life I found comfort in painting. It became a passage that allowed me to express myself directly from the heart, without the need for words.

My journey to Australia has allowed me to see and experience many beautiful places and is one of the many journeys that continually inspires me and is boldly and colourfully present in my art.

Ever since I first laid eyes on pictures of Australia as a 10 year old, I somehow I knew it was destined to be my home. However, for a long time, I had no idea how to make it happen. In my late 20’s I met a lovely Western Australian couple traveling through Germany, that casually said “If you’re ever in Australia, come visit”. Without hesitation, I booked our flights the following week!

Many years later and many forms filled out and submitted, I finally became an Australian Citizen, a very proud moment for me.

I travelled around this beautiful country with my young family for five months before finally settling in Broome, WA. With my extensive background in nursing, naturopathy and homeopathy, I took the leap and started my own natural health practice and spent ten years helping people achieve health and wellness. Despite the demands of running a business and raising a family, I never abandoned my passion for art.

Painting became my outlet, a way to unwind and express myself creatively. No matter where I lived, I made sure I always had a studio so I could paint for my own balance and self-expression.

I soon realised my true passion was in painting and I stepped deeper into my journey as an artist.

When I left Broome for Sydney in 2013 I jumped headfirst into art, exhibiting my works regularly and pursuing ongoing training at the National Art School. I opened my Balmain studio and Art School in 2016, where I am still working and teaching today.

I have a true desire for travel, regularly exploring rural landscapes and fully immersing myself in painting. In 2018, I travelled to a remote Greek island to reconnect with myself and my art. My time on the island was simple, peaceful and free from modern distractions. I had a small house where I painted every day, letting my creativity flow. It was a transformative experience allowing me to let go of daily stress and focus solely on my art. Leaving the island was bittersweet, but I returned home with a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper connection to my art. The experience will always hold a special place in my heart.

Through my art I am continually looking to understand life and express all my felt responses.
