Kirana’s story

Art is therapy

I was born in Germany, into a family of intellectuals. As a child, I often struggled to articulate my thoughts, leaving me feeling unheard and unconnected to those around me.

However, colours and images seemed to come easily to me and early on in life I found comfort in painting. Art became a passage that allowed me to express myself directly from the heart, without the need for words.

I first saw pictures of Australia as a 10-year-old and somehow knew that it was destined to be my home. Then, in my late 20’s I met a lovely Western Australian couple traveling through Germany, that casually said “If you’re ever in Australia, come visit”. Without hesitation, I booked our flights the following week!

I travelled around this beautiful country with my young family for five months before finally settling in Broome, WA. With my extensive background in nursing, naturopathy and homeopathy, I took the leap and started my own natural health practice. I spent ten years helping people achieve health and wellness.

Despite the demands of running a business and raising a family, I never abandoned my passion for art. No matter where I lived, I made sure that I always had a studio.

I soon realised my true passion was in painting and decided to step deeper into my journey as an artist.

When I left Broome for Sydney in 2013, I jumped headfirst into art, exhibiting my works regularly and pursuing ongoing training at the National Art School. I opened a studio and art school in the inner west suburb of Balmain in 2016, where I worked and taught until moving to a new studio in Abbotsford in 2024.

I have a true desire for travel, regularly exploring rural landscapes and fully immersing myself in painting.

My journey to Australia allowed me to see and experience many beautiful places and is one of the many journeys that continually inspires me and is boldly and colourfully present in my art. Indeed, I have so loved living in Australia that I eventually became an Australian citizen, a very proud moment for me.

In 2018, I travelled to a remote Greek island to reconnect with myself and my art. My time on the island was simple, peaceful and free from modern distractions. I had a small house where I painted every day, letting my creativity flow. It was a transformative experience, allowing me to let go of daily stress and focus solely on my art. Leaving the island was bittersweet, but I returned to Australia with a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper connection to my art.

I have always yearned for a deep connection with others, one that goes far beyond words. It has been my life’s quest to find and create this sense of belonging and connection in myself, and through my art to offer a way for others to also find it in themselves.

In my art, I hope to produce tangible works that communicate – without words – the human qualities and energies that connect us all.

As an artist, I am awakened to the intricate beauty of colour, form, space and shape. This heightened awareness fosters a deeper affection and tenderness for our world and nurtures a spirit of generosity in life. As I evolve as an artist, these qualities of kindness and love resonate within me, inspiring my work to reflect the importance of looking after one another. My artistic journey is one of growing into a deeper, kinder and gentler individual, with the aspiration to evoke these sentiments in others.

Through my art I am continually looking to understand life and express how I feel.
