Exploring Light and Shadow in Art + Life

Light and shadow both play a very transformative role in art, so much so - I hear myself often discussing it in our art lessons. Incorporating light and shadow into an artwork, even in abstract, conveys emotion and depth while aiding in illustrating the narrative.

This inclusion isn't simple and demands understanding of light and its creation of shadow. We often notice light only through the shadows it casts, a concept that deeply fascinates me.

I love playing with both light and shadow in my artworks.

Beyond any technique, light and shadow in paintings serve as potent symbols and metaphors. Light may represent enlightenment, truth, or spiritual awakening, while shadow can signify mystery, fear, contemplation, rest, and dreaming. Light provides clarity and confidence, while shadow adds contrast, reminding us of life's complexities.

I love this interplay so very much. Even in the examples above, it's evident how essential both are to our daily experiences.

This month I am travelling to Europe, where I'll encounter light and shadow in a new light. We'll visit dear relatives and friends, attend a 24-hour car race, experience a live Ramstein concert in Barcelona, then unwind in Sardinia and Rome. I plan to capture my experiences through colour sketching and collage, visually expressing my journey.  You will see some of the outcomes and my reflections, I am sure, as the trip is unfolding, as well as how I am feeling.

Personally, I find Australia much lighter in every way. Of course, I am excited and exhilarated to go. However, I anticipate returning home with even greater happiness and excitement.

Please find below the upcoming events before my departure for Europe and my plans for the coming months. I very much hope to see you at one of these beautiful and exciting events.

With lots of love,

Kirana xx
