You Can Move Through the Fear
In my studio with students, I often hear how daunting it can feel to start an artwork—how that very first step becomes the hardest one to take. It’s as though the simple act of “just painting” suddenly feels impossible.
I know that feeling myself. Every morning, when I step into my studio at 5am, I face it again. It’s subtle, but it’s there—a hesitation, a resistance. And every morning, I have to find a way around it.
For me, it’s rarely about the paint or the canvas. It’s my thoughts that get in the way. Fear of failure. Fear of making a mess. Doubt. So, I’ve made a rule: I must show up. No matter how I feel, I enter my studio at 5am. Once I’m there, I gently steer around my thoughts with a few practices—sometimes I pray, sometimes I meditate, but mostly, I just allow myself to feel. I feel the fear, the uncertainty, the remnants of dreams, the hush of a day not yet begun.
If you’re struggling to start, try this: write a word on your canvas—something that captures how you feel, how this day feels. Let that word be your anchor. Then choose a colour that matches it and paint around it, or over it. Add another word. Another colour. Keep going. Use whatever materials you have on hand.
Step away, breathe, and come back to it. Try not to focus on where it’s heading or what it should become. Just stay in the process. I promise you—it will evolve.
And if it all turns into a glorious mess? That’s fine too. You can always soften it with a layer of white paint and begin again. It’s a journey. And like all journeys into colour and expression, you will find beauty along the way.
With lots of love,
Kirana xx
